Maybe it’s a few stray chin hairs that seem to get darker, thicker, or more noticeable over time. Or maybe you’re seeing more persistent growth along your chin or upper lip. Either way, unwanted hair on the chin and upper lip is a common concern—and one our guests ask us about all the time.
If you’ve found yourself wondering where it came from (and, more importantly, how to get rid of it), you’re in the right place. We’re breaking down what can cause chin hair in women, plus your options for safely removing and managing it.

What Causes Chin Hair in Women?
Chin hair in women can be influenced by genetics, aging, hormones, certain medical conditions, and even medications. As waxing experts, we see all kinds of facial hair, from a few coarse chin hairs to more noticeable growth along the chin, jawline, and upper lip.
Genetics
Sometimes, facial hair simply runs in the family. Genetics can influence how much body and facial hair you have, as well as how noticeable that hair is. Whether or not you decide to remove what you’ve inherited is entirely up to you—each person will have their own preference.
Medical Conditions
In some cases, increased facial hair can be associated with a medical condition. One of the most common examples we hear about from our guests is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)—which is now known as polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS).
In women with PCOS, high levels of hormones called androgens can cause extra facial hair, including on the chin or sideburn areas. PCOS facial hair can be frustrating, but once you find your preferred method for managing it (and a good provider who listens and understands), it becomes a lot less daunting.
There are other medical conditions that can influence hormones and cause facial hair growth, so if you see sudden or noticeable changes in your hair growth pattern, it’s best to speak to a medical professional.
Aging
Facial hair can also change as you get older, particularly during perimenopause and menopause. Many hair and skin changes during menopause can be attributed to hormonal changes, namely a decline in estrogen. One possible result? Unwanted facial hair on the chin or upper lip that just doesn’t go away.
Medications
Certain medications can also be associated with increased facial hair growth. If you’ve noticed increased chin hair after starting a medication, talk to your healthcare provider. And remember, don’t panic! There are plenty of options for removing unwanted facial hair.
How Can Women Get Rid of Chin Hair?
There are a number of ways to get rid of chin hair, both at-home and professionally. Which option you choose will ultimately depend on your budget and goals, so let’s dive into a comparison of a few different chin hair removal methods.
At-Home Chin and Facial Hair Removal
In a pinch, these at-home chin hair removal options can help you quickly take care of unwanted hair on your own.
Shaving
Tried and true, shaving is an easy, affordable, and accessible way to remove chin and other facial hair at home. The immediate results and skin-smoothing benefits make it a good option in a pinch, but for long-term facial hair management, it can quickly become tedious.
The results of shaving are short-lived, and once they wear off, you’re left with stubble to contend with. Frequent shaving can also contribute to skin irritation or redness.
Tweezing
Like shaving, tweezing is an affordable and accessible way to remove facial hair. It lasts longer than shaving since it removes hair at the root, but it’s better suited for plucking one-off strays than it is for larger patches of hair. Tweezing can become time-consuming, and it might also require a bit of a learning curve to avoid breaking hair rather than removing it fully.
Professional Chin and Facial Hair Removal
Professional hair removal goes beyond longer-lasting results. It gives you a routine with expert guidance, which can make facial hair easier to manage over time.
Electrolysis
Electrolysis is one of the oldest professional treatments for removing facial hair, and it’s the only hair removal method recognized as truly permanent by the FDA. Electrolysis targets one hair follicle at a time using an electrical current, eventually destroying the follicle and preventing future hair growth. It also works on all hair colors, including gray and white hairs.
The biggest downsides, according to most, are discomfort during treatment and the number of treatment sessions required. It typically takes between 10 and 40 sessions for permanent hair removal. The cost of electrolysis is also on the higher side, but since the end result is usually permanent, the higher expenses upfront may be worth it depending on your goals.
Laser
Laser hair removal uses concentrated light to target pigment in the hair and damage the follicle, reducing future hair growth. Unlike electrolysis, laser is considered a long-term hair reduction method rather than permanent hair removal.
You’ll typically need multiple sessions before seeing your full results, which means a bigger investment of both time and money upfront. Laser also tends to work best on darker hair because the technology targets pigment in the hair follicle. Blonde, red, gray, and white hairs may not respond as effectively.
For those who are good candidates, laser can significantly reduce facial hair over time. However, maintenance treatments may still be needed, and results can vary from person to person.
Sugaring
Sugaring is also a popular method for chin and facial hair removal. A technician uses a paste ball made of sugar, lemon and water, rolling it across the skin to pull out hair. When done correctly, sugaring removes hair from the root, and the results last a few weeks.
That said, because the same paste ball is used throughout the service, sugaring may not be as hygienic as other hair removal methods. The results are also less predictable because they’re very dependent on the provider’s technique. Hair can easily break if not removed properly, which leads to short-lived results and uneven regrowth.
Waxing
Chin waxing is a convenient option that removes hair from the root, giving you smooth skin immediately without the time or upfront cost of more permanent options. It’s also fast (about 15 minutes start to finish), and although facial hair tends to grow a bit faster than body hair, results typically last 2-3 weeks.
When done by a trained professional, facial waxing also provides very reliable and consistent results. The skin on your face can be more delicate, which is why both the wax and the person using it matter. At European Wax Center, our Wax Specialists are specifically trained in facial waxing and use our proprietary Comfort Wax®. Made with beeswax, it grips hair rather than skin, helping remove unwanted hair from the root without unnecessarily tugging.
And while the benefits of waxing are immediate, the longer you do it, the better the results get. Consistency can even lead to finer hair and slower regrowth over time. And that’s just the beginning. The benefits of facial waxing go beyond hair removal—waxing can also benefit your skin.
