Get Radiant, Bump-Free Skin With Our Brightening Ingrown Hair Serum
How does Vitamin C work to reverse skin discoloration?
Vitamin C can block melanin formation by regulating an enzyme called tyrosinase. Our Brightening Ingrown Hair Serum features both Vitamin C and Azelaic Acid, both of which combat the process of hyperpigmentation. And all of our Ingrown Hair Serums contain tea tree oil, which helps reduce inflammation and calm red, irritated skin.
Another great thing about Vitamin C is that while it's been shown to slowly and steadily reduce the appearance of abnormal discoloration and hyperpigmentation, it doesn't affect your natural skin tone or normal melanin deposits, so you stay your same, gorgeous self!

So, what actually causes skin discoloration?
One of the common issues new guests ask our Wax Specialists about is skin discoloration. Things like shaving can cause small cuts in the skin, which then produces pigment, which accounts for the dark spots that can show up on any area you shave, but especially your underarms and bikini area.
Any trauma to the skin, like that from acne or deep ingrown hairs, can also cause hyperpigmentation.
Other factors—like sun exposure, aging, certain medications, hormonal changes and people who have darker skin tones—increases the likelihood of hyperpigmentation.
Are there any specific parts of the body that are more prone to discoloration?
Exposure to the sun compounds the effects of hyperpigmentation. Of course, levels of sun exposure can be different for everyone. For example, if you're spending your summer in a bikini on the beach, you might experience skin discoloration in places like your bikini line and underarms, whereas someone who spends more time indoors would not.
But generally, common places for discoloration include the upper lip, cheeks, arms and chest.
EXPERT TIP

"Not only does the IGHS Brightening prevent ingrown hair in my underarms, but this has become my go-to partner product to use alongside our Aloe Deodorant.
I feel confident when I lift my arms because I'm not as worried about discoloration or bumps."

Is there anything I can do to prevent skin discoloration?
While there's no way to prevent skin discoloration 100%, there are things you can do that act as preventative measures.
- If you're noticing skin discoloration on your face, wearing a hat with a wide brim (especially if you're outdoors during the peak hours of 10 am - 2 pm) can help
- Use a broad-spectrum SPF if you plan on going outside. Our Aloe Daily Sunscreen is an absolute powerhouse of a product: not only does it protect from both UV-A and UV-B rays with an SPF of 30, it also does something that no other sunscreen on the market does: it helps visibly reduce the appearance of hair in between waxes.
- Things like ingrown hairs and improper hair removal techniques (that can lead to skin infections) can damage your skin enough to cause discoloration. By establishing a wax routine with our professional Wax Specialists, and using post-wax aftercare designed specifically for waxed skin, you can keep your skin looking clearer and brighter.
