Wax Expert and Corporate Field Trainer Stacie Harding dispels the 3 biggest myths about waxing.
Waxing has long been a trusted hair removal method, but misconceptions about the process can keep some people from enjoying its benefits. From concerns about pain to fears of skin damage, these myths often overshadow the truth. It’s time to set the record straight! Let’s explore and debunk three of the most common waxing myths so you can feel confident about choosing waxing as your go-to hair removal method.
Myth #1: Waxing Is Too Painful to Handle
One of the most widespread waxing myths is that the process is unbearably painful. While it’s true that waxing can cause some discomfort—especially for first-timers—it’s not nearly as bad as many believe.
The Truth:
Waxing removes hair from the root, so a brief sensation of discomfort is normal. However, professional waxing services are designed to minimize discomfort. At European Wax Center, our proprietary Comfort Wax® is specially formulated to adhere to hair, not skin, which significantly reduces pain. Additionally, our highly trained wax specialists use techniques that make the experience as quick and comfortable as possible.
Pro Tips to Minimize Discomfort:
-
Exfoliate Before Your Reservation: Removing dead skin cells allows the wax to grip hair more effectively, making the process smoother.
-
Stay Hydrated: Well-hydrated skin tends to be more resilient and less sensitive.
-
Stick to a Routine: Regular waxing weakens hair follicles; hair grows back finer, and waxing becomes less painful over time.
Myth #2: Waxing Damages Your Skin
Another common myth suggests that waxing can cause long-term skin damage or lead to sagging. This misconception likely stems from the fact that waxing involves pulling hair from the root, which some assume might affect the skin’s elasticity.
The Truth:
Waxing does not damage your skin when performed by a trained professional. In fact, waxing can be beneficial for your skin. It acts as a natural exfoliant, pulling up dead skin cells along with unwanted hair, leaving your skin smoother and more radiant. The tugging action is focused on the hair, not the skin, especially with high-quality waxes like EWC’s Comfort Wax®.
Skin-Safe Practices:
-
Professional Care Matters: Choosing experienced wax specialists ensures that the technique is gentle and effective.
-
Aftercare Is Key: Following proper post-waxing care, such as moisturizing with EWC SLOW® Aloe Body Lotion, helps maintain healthy, glowing skin.
Myth #3: Waxing Only Works For a Few Hair Types
Many people believe that waxing requires hair to be extremely long or that certain hair types—such as coarse or curly hair—are unsuitable for waxing. This myth often deters people from trying waxing in the first place.
The Truth:
Waxing works for nearly all hair types and lengths, as long as the hair is at least ¼ inch long (about the size of a grain of rice). This length allows the wax to grip the hair effectively for complete removal. Whether you have fine, coarse, straight, or curly hair, professional waxing can help you achieve smooth, hair-free skin.
Benefits for All Hair Types:
-
Coarse or Curly Hair: Waxing is especially effective for these hair types, as it removes hair from the root, reducing the risk of ingrown hairs compared to shaving.
-
Fine or Light Hair: Waxing captures even the smallest, lightest hairs that shaving often misses, giving you a flawlessly smooth finish.
Why Debunking Waxing Myths Matters
Myths about waxing can discourage people from experiencing its many benefits, but the reality is that waxing is a safe, effective, and long-lasting hair removal method. From smoother skin to reduced regrowth and less irritation compared to shaving, waxing offers a range of advantages that make it worth a try.

The first misconception is that waxing is painful. Not true. Your first experience is going to be uncomfortable; however, maintaining a consistent waxing regimen of every 3-4 weeks is going to make sure that each experience is more tolerable.
The second misconception is that if I wax, my hair is going to grow in thicker. That’s not true, either! When we remove the hair, we remove the entire root ball. So when the new hair grows back from a new root ball, your hair is going to grow in thinner.
And finally, is it okay to tweeze your ingrown hair? No, it’s not okay! If you tweeze your ingrown hair, then your hair is going to continue to get trapped under the skin, and it’s never going to break the surface allowing us to pull it. Also, when you come in for your wax, your hair’s going to be out of the growth cycle and you’ll never be able to get that great, gorgeous waxed skin.
